Checking out

Akyra Manor, Chiang Mai, Thailand

by Steve Hartridge | December 2017

"By any definition my suite was luxurious. The staff were equally memorable – I had a dental emergency and they sourced a dentist and set up an appointment for me. I liked the herbal sleep drink, which comes with the turn-down service and the daily mocktail recipe suggestion, which you can turn into a cocktail with items from the minibar. The hotel is funky: it is an ‘art hotel’ and I enjoyed the exhibition of watercolour artworks around the hotel by guest artist Kritika Buabushaya"

THE BACKGROUND: This five-star boutique property has 30 suites, each built around a private indoor courtyard. Ultra-stylish inside, the hotel’s striking facade is inspired by Chiang Mai’s ancient crumbling city walls.

THE LOCATION: It is set in a small soi (street) off the busy Ninnanhaem Road in the ‘new’ part of Chiang Mai, close to but outside the walled Old Town. It is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and bars and a tuk tuk ride from night markets and the river.

THE ROOM: I stayed in a large akyra Manor Suite, a chic and expansive space with plenty of luxuries including Egyptian cotton sheets and oversized towels, and the grandiose bathroom featured an oversized rain shower. It felt like I had walked into an Asian spa: think wooden floors, sliding doors, big mirrors and bamboos in pots. The centerpiece of a large lounge area with a two-corner couch was a fabulous sunken Jacuzzi bath. Outside was a big balcony with a table and lounger. The only tiny negative: it was quite dimly lit.

KEY FACILITIES: The highlight is Rise, a rooftop bar with hillside views and an infinity swimming pool. The hotel offers a range of ‘experiences’, including golf packages, Thai cooking classes, private yoga sessions, Thai boxing, cocktail mixology lessons and an elephant interaction programmed designed as a hands-on experience to learn more about the animals and their relationship with their mahouts (handlers), amongst others.

RATES: Rooms start from around $190 with breakfast.
