Andaz Scottsdale Resort and Spa, Arizona, USA
by Steve Hartridge | January 2017
"The Andaz immerses guests in Scottsdale’s past, present and location. It provides a showcase for the region’s indigenous art, culture and cuisine. Many of the in-house art pieces are accrued via a partnership with a group, Cattle Track, that promotes local area artists. Guests can expect to see live art taking shape on property. The hotel takes cats and dogs, for $150 per stay – but only if they weigh less than 50 lbs."
THE BACKGROUND: After several soft launches and trial evenings playing host to invited guests and groups, Scottsdale’s newest property opened last month. The 201 guest spaces – in a casita-style that is more private villa than hotel room – are housed in bungalows located in a series of ‘blocks’ spread across 23 acres. The resort’s desert-inspired interior draws inspiration from some of the time-honoured architects and artists who helped shape Scottsdale, most obviously Frank Lloyd Wright.
THE LOCATION: In Paradise Valley, about a 15-minute drive from the shops, galleries, bars and restaurants of Old Scottsdale. It is surrounded by desert landscape and mountains. Scenic attractions like Camelback Mountain and Pinnacle Peak are close by. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is 16 miles (23 minutes) away.
THE ROOM: My Large King room was bright, airy, modern – and huge. There were folk artwork touches and fun elements like a box of kiddies’ crayons and a colouring pattern next to the bed. Other features included a 65-inch flat screen TV, large couch, walk-through closet, large double-shower and a coffee-making area. The high wooden beams are a leftover from the previous property. At the front entrance there’s an outside terrace area with a couch and chairs, and at the back a private, walled patio space with two sun-loungers. Wi-Fi, some snacks, water and soft drinks are complimentary.
RESTAURANTS/BARS: Guests see chefs at work as they enter the Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen. The glass-panelled restaurant features an open kitchen, plancha grill, and a chef’s table.
FACILITIES: Three pools include the main Turquoise Pool, which has private cabanas. There’s a fitness centre and Palo Verde Spa and Apothecary with treatments featuring botanical products.
THE RATES: A three-night stay in an entry Andaz Queen room in May 2017 starts from £1,321.
