"This is a place where guests can be as sociable or as private as they choose. It’s also a place where the staff are more likely to remember your dog’s name than yours! The hotel is a good choice at any time of year but, with its open fires and warm atmosphere, is especially cosy in the autumn and winter. Also recommend for short stays or business lunches. Chic and casual!"
THE BACKGROUND: Created by the de Savary family in 2009 this historic seaside property has all the features of an English pub combined with the luxury and style of a boutique hotel. Dogs and children are welcome (in that order!). The gastro pub attracts discerning locals who can enjoy a daily-changing menu of local produce.
THE LOCATION: Tucked away in the corner of Babbacombe Bay, a few miles outside of Torquay on the English Riviera and 45 minutes’ drive from Exeter. Visitors arriving by boat can moor in the bay. This charming bolt hole is ideally situated for a lazy weekend break at any time of year.
THE ROOM: All rooms are sea facing and come with a nautical theme. The design is contemporary and my stylish bathroom featured Elemis amenities. Families can choose from one of four cottages taking up to nine people.
KEY FACILITIES: Chic coastal living comes with its own Parisian spa. Corporate events for up to 16 people can be accommodated board-room style in the conservatory. There are coastal walking paths and guests can choose from activities like horse riding, golf and fishing. Guests tend to treat the place like a home from home and are more likely to be found relaxing in the drawing room reading a book or simply staring wistfully out to sea.
THE RESTAURANTS/BARS: Gastro-inspired dining with a quiet area for business lunches. The hotel has regular seafood events and BBQ lunches.
THE RATES: Daily rates including breakfast start from around £195 for a double room.
