Darwin Central Hotel, Darwin, Australia

Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

by Chloe Bain | September 2015

"This is a conveniently located hotel with modern and comfortable rooms and excellent service. It is a great base from which to explore the city as everything visitors are likely to want to see and do is right on the doorstep. The hotel has its own contemporary look, with lots of eye-catching little local touches and the friendly, helpful staff are what really make this a relaxed home-from-home choice."

THE BACKGROUND: The building housing the hotel was Darwin’s Post Office until 1996 when it was developed and officially opened as a hotel. For five years it operated as the All Season Premier Darwin Central Hotel, managed by the Accor group, but has been an independent boutique hotel since 2002.

THE LOCATION: In the heart of Darwin’s central business district, the hotel is situated a short walk from restaurants, cafés, shops and tourism facilities, as well as the waterfront, and is a 15- minute drive from Darwin airport.

THE ROOM: The hotel has 132 rooms, suites and studios with kitchenette. Minimalist in style and chic, mine was a spacious and comfortable twin with queen-sized beds. It featured a large desk area, TV, minibar and tea/coffee-making facilities. The bathroom was a fair size with quality ‘All About Me’ toiletries using indigenous lemongrass and eucalyptus essential oils.

KEY FACILITIES: The hotel has an outdoor plunge pool and small sun deck area, two restaurants and offers 24-hour room service. Guests can also order deliveries to the room from nearby town centre restaurants. Throughout the hotel there are artworks by local artists. The black and white photographs of Darwin help ensure the hotel reflects elements of the city’s style and also gives it a more individualised style.

THE RESTAURANTS/BARS: The Waterhole restaurant offered an impressive buffet breakfast from 06.00-10.00 daily; while Salvatores Café served a wide range of Italian dishes and snacks all day until 19.30. The style of both, and other public areas, is light and open with contemporary furnishings that are given added vibrancy by the use of colourful interior design features

THE RATES: Rates for the twin queen room start from AUS$150 (£68.70p) per room per night.
