Hilton Brighton Metropole

Brighton, UK

"It’s the atmosphere and service which makes a hotel seem really special and that’s what makes this one stand out from the crowd. A special mention goes to Gabor the concierge, who, when asked for some peppermint tea bags, came back with a handful and a big smile on his face saying if we needed any more, or if we needed anything at all, he was there to help."

THE BACKGROUND: Brighton landmark designed by the architect Alfred Woodhouse whose other claim to fame is the Natural History Museum, this 340 guest room property has an imposing presence on the Brighton seafront.

THE LOCATION: It's right in the heart of things, overlooking the West Pier and the soon to be built I360. With great views out to sea, and within a short walk of the Lanes, it is a great base from which to explore Brighton.

THE ROOM: Well-appointed and with modern décor which accentuates the room, it's a good space for relaxing and/or working. There is a king sized bed with a very comfortable mattress, wardrobe, safe, drawers, desk with chair, small table, un-stocked fridge, kettle, bedside tables and a long shared balcony from which to get a blast of sea air. The bathroom has an over-bath shower and a good selection of toiletries by Peter Thomas Roth. High speed wireless internet access is available.

KEY FACILITIES: The LivingWell Health Club has cardio and strength training machines while the Beauty Rooms offer massages, wraps, facials, a nail bar, solarium and hair salon. The hotel also boasts an indoor pool, whirlpool and sauna. Secure underground car parking is available, charged at an overnight rate.

THE RESTAURANTS/BARS: Waterhouse Bar & Terrace has a menu featuring locally-sourced items and opens for breakfast, dinner and Sunday brunch. The buffet breakfast included a good selection of hot items, fruits, pastries, cold meats, cheeses and fish and a cute lower-level buffet area for the little ones to help themselves to their own selection. Breakfast staff were very efficient and friendly. The bar had a buzzy, lively atmosphere until late into the evening. It also serves light meals and there is-24 hour in-room dining. The Salt Room restaurant also offers British food and ocean views.

THE RATES: From £82 per night.
