Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, Japan

by Laura Gelder | March 2017

"If you, like me, dream of being Scarlett Johansson (or Bill Murray) in Lost in Translation during your stay in Tokyo then book this hotel. It’s worth it for the window seat alone, where you can lie in your helpfully provided kimono and watch the glittering city laid out before you. The only drawback was the iPad-controlled lights – too techy for me!"

THE BACKGROUND: Prince Hotels is a prestigious Japanese brand that is over 60 years old. It has 50-plus hotels, mostly in Japan (nine in Tokyo). The Prince Gallery opened in 2016 and is also part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection.

THE LOCATION: In the central Chiyoda ward in the Tokyo Garden Terrace, a slick skyscraper with retail and F&B spaces 45-minutes from Haneda Airport.

THE ROOM: My 42-square-metre Club Deluxe King room had a two-metre-wide bed, widescreen TV and, best of all, a huge window seat with a breathtaking city vista. The decor was light and mixed warm and neutral tones. The shower and large bath tub are housed in a glass cube which can be clear or opaque at the touch of a button. The Club rooms come with access to the Club Lounge, an exclusive and calm space with all-day complimentary food and drinks.

KEY FACILITIES: The indoor pool and hot bath also have spectacular views and the atmosphere is exclusive health club rather than hotel. Pampering can be found in the Swiss Perfection Spa Kioi and there's also an impressively equipped gym. The all-day dining Oasis Garden restaurant serves up an impressive breakfast buffet and Italian pasta and grill the rest of the day. I was lucky enough to eat at Washoku Souten, the hotel’s fine-dining Japanese restaurant which serves its beautiful food with plenty of theatre. There is also a sushi bar and sake bar. The cool Sky Gallery Lounge Levita has cathedral-like windows and comfortable arm chairs.

RATES: Club Deluxe rooms are from around £307 per night.
