Shangri-La Boracay, Philippines

Florida, USA

by Steve Thompson | October 2015

"This hotel has a perfect location for those wanting to get away from it all and relax in the lap of luxury. Ideal for honeymooners and couples, the facilities are extensive and of a high standard. In addition, the property is also near enough to the bars, restaurants and shops of White Beach for added local interest."

THE BACKGROUND: The Shangri-La Boracay is a luxury haven of peace and tranquillity set in its own grounds with two private beaches. Shuttle buses depart every half an hour to the hustle and bustle of White Beach, a 15 minute ride away.

THE LOCATION: The hotel is situated in the quiet north-western corner of the paradise island of Boracay. After landing at Caticlan Airport, I was greeted by a hotel representative and escorted to an airport lounge for transfers by private minibus to an exclusive jetty port, from there a 15-minute speedboat ride connected us to the hotel.

THE ROOM: My deluxe room was a decent size and designed with local touches such as an abaca weave rug and local capiz shell lighting. It was well equipped to a five-star luxury standard with flat screen satellite TV and free wifi, comfortable day bed and good sized balcony. The modern bathroom included plenty of L’Occitane products.

KEY FACILITIES: Spread over 12 hectares, facilities included an amazingly large pool in a spider format with infinity edges, and a watersports centre offering kayaking, windsurfing and jet skiing. An onsite health club had two tennis courts and inside activites included billiards. For pampering there was a 5500 sq m CHI spa offering a wide range of therapies and treatments. There was also an adventure zone and indoor playground for children.

THE RESTAURANTS/BARS: There were seven bars and restaurants serving Filipino and international cuisine. At the Solana bar, high up on the cliff side, guests can relax in large cabanas whilst listening to the live music, or at the Alon beach bar there are half-price cocktails. Rima is the fine dining option.

THE RATES: Rates start from around £200 per night.
