Swissotel Le Plaza Basel, Switzerland

This hotel feels incredibly spacious and the rooms modern, cosy and comfortable. Overall the feel of the hotel during my stay was more corporate than leisure but this was because of the number of delegates staying at the time. The rooms and facilities are perfectly suited to leisure travellers too. The staff were extremely helpful when it came to recommendations and directions to local attractions and restaurants.

THE BACKGROUND: This 238-room four-star-plus hotel is largely designed for business travellers, with extensive meeting facilities and break-out areas on each floor. But the location also makes it popular for leisure travellers at the start or end of a Rhine river cruise or just sightseeing in this compact, pretty city.

THE LOCATION: The hotel is 15 minutes by car from the airport and situated on the north side of the river just a few tram stops from the old town over on the south side. It is opposite and connected to Congress Center Basel and a five-minute walk from the city’s Musical Theatre.

THE ROOM: My Junior Suite was spacious and light, mixing warm yellow with neutral tones. As well as the king-size bed there was a chaise longue and a sofa area with a coffee table placed next to the round attic-style window looking across the city’s rooftops. Amenities included a Lavazza coffee machine and mini bar. The marble bathroom had a bath/shower combo. A pillow menu was available and the hotel delivers a complimentary paper to the room each morning. All rooms have free wifi.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a great view from the expansive four-poster bed, while teak furnishings combined with a contemporary decor. The large open-air bathroom included a deep bath, traditional shower and exhilarating, ‘waterfall’ with bamboo screening and landscaping.

KEY FACILITIES: The Purovel Sport Fitness Centre had a small but functional space with cardio and weight machines as well as sauna and steam rooms. Restaurants/Bars: Grill25 sat at street level and had contemporary decor and art along with a modern international menu. At breakfast the self-servive area offered both hot and continental options. For lunch I sampled the salad bar and had a light Asian-flavoured duck, potato and pak choi dish. Other options included the signature burger. There was also a small, stylish lobby bar which served snacks.

THE RATES: Prices lead in at £155 per night for a Classic Room on a room-only basis.
