Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa, Anguilla

by Steve Hartridge | June 2016

"This resort is a welcome boost to the east end of Anguilla where both accommodation and dining choices are relatively limited. Zemi Beach’s symbol is the three-point stone ‘zemi’, said to have been once worshipped by Anguilla’s ancient Taino Indians who believed it to be the dwelling place of the spirit."

THE BACKGROUND: Zemi Beach is on Shoal Bay in Anguilla’s less touristy East End. The reception area is on ‘road level’ but the property then descends down to the beach and occupies six acres.

THE ROOM: My villa-style ‘Deluxe room’, featuring a high ceiling and bright, white-washed walls and sandstone tiles, was located mid-point up the resort, just a short walk to the beach. A large bedroom was partly portioned by a semi-wall. Kitchen facilities included a illy coffee-maker and mini-bar. The bathroom was huge, with a large sunken bath, a walk-in shower with old-style copper fittings and Malin + Goetz toiletries. It felt what it was – new and spotlessly clean. All guestrooms have balconies or terraces with sea or oceanfront views.

FACILITIES: The resort’s centrepiece is a Thai-inspired spa, whose various treatment rooms are housed in imported original wooden buildings, with some of the features of this former Thai House over 300 years old. The spa, which offers treatments based on the ‘five elements’, also features the only hamman on the island, a sun deck for mud and salt body treatments, a yoga deck and a ‘bar’ serving juices made from fruits, herbs and plants from the property’s own garden. There’s also a Tranquility pool, a lap pool, a beach pool with cabanas, a Zemi Beach Kid’s Club and a small gym. But for many the main highlight will be the white-sand beaches and two reefs located immediately outside the resort.

RESTAURANTS/BARS: Stone is a fine- dining restaurant with a focus on locally sourced-ingredients. Unusually for the Caribbean, it also features air conditioning. 20 Knots is a more casual dining option, and A ‘rhum room’ offers a choice of over 100 rums and just as many late-night cocktails.

THE RATES: Prices start from £460 a night for a Deluxe room. Seasonal variations in rates apply.
