Discover Puerto Rico launches virtual initiative

by Jessica Pook

Discover Puerto Rico has invited people to ‘Escape to Puerto Rico this weekend, virtually’ by showcasing some of the destination’s culture online.

Participants can learn how to salsa dance, make cocktails and cook authentic Puerto Rican cuisine this March 27-29, 2020 with the help of local experts.

The weekend kicks off with a salsa lesson on Friday, March 27 from 8.00pm. The dance class will kick-off with a brief overview of basic salsa steps from notable salsa dancers, Tito Ortos and Tamara Livolsi, and turn into a salsa dance party. To participate, log into Zoom, free (Meeting ID #293-759-126) at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday night will be a cocktail masterclass with the island's top bartender, Roberto Berdecia, co-owner of acclaimed bars La Factoría (featured in the music video of the hit song, Despacito) and Jungle Bird. The mixology class will take place via Instagram Live at @discoverpuertorico from 7pm on Saturday 28.

Viewers can learn how to cook traditional Puerto Rican dishes on Sunday evening with a cooking class hosted by Puerto Rican chef, Wilo Benet from Wilo Eatery & Bar. He will talk participants through how to create one of his favorite dishes on Instagram Live at @discoverpuertorico

“We want to extend an important part of our culture – our salsa music and dancing, our mixology and our delicious cuisine – to uplift people during these challenging times. We encourage travellers to day dream about our island now and consider a visit later, when the time is right. In the meantime, we’re excited to join them in their living rooms for this virtual getaway,” said Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico.
